Jean-Michel Basquiat : of symbols and signs

Jean-Michel Basquiat's symbolic, complex, and often emotionally charged work made a huge impact on the 1980s downtown New York City art scene. And though his all-too-brief career ended when he died at age 27, Basquiat left behind an enormous legacy-not only in the number of works he produced, but also in the messages he encoded around political, social, racial, and cultural issues.
This exciting book shows how Basquiat used an intricate network of signs and symbols to challenge the very system that made him a darling of the art world. It traces his inspiration from cartoons, children's drawings, and advertising as well as his own Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage; discusses the influence of African-American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; and shows how Basquiat incorporated into his work classical themes and contemporary icons-from athletes to musicians. What becomes clear is how, even as a young man, Basquiat had a profound understanding of the artist's role in art history, and of his position as a young Black artist in a world of racism, suppression and social injustice.
This book helps readers decode Basquiat's unique lingua franca, an intoxicating body of work brimming with social commentary that was in turns incisive, angry, comic, hip, and heartbreaking, and that remains powerful and meaningful today. -

Although Salvador Dali's characteristically provocative behavior and bizarre pictorial language made him an outlier in high society, his body of work reflects his century's most important innovations and concerns.
This introduction to Dali's work features dozens of exquisite reproductions as it traces the artist's development, life and career. Readers will learn how he was influenced by contemporaries Miro, Ernst, and de Chirico as well as by Raphael and Gaudi. It explores his early adoption of Surrealism, his fascination with the subconscious, and his antipathy toward war. It illustrates how Dali's return to the Catholic church and his interest in nuclear and atomic physics was manifested in his paintings; how he experimented in film and, later, even created holograms.
By making Dali's often perplexing art accessible to audiences of every level, this engaging introduction helps readers understand why he remains one of the most influential-and imitated-artists of all time. -

For eight years before the First World War, a young Georges Braque and his friend Pablo Picasso shaped what was perhaps the most revolutionary stage in the history of modern painting: Cubism. This catalog of the accompanying exhibition focuses on Braque's turbulent pre-WWI period to reveal the processes by which the artist developed or reinvented his style in rapid succession- from Fauvism, Proto-Cubism, Analytical Cubism, papier colle to Synthetic Cubism. The amazing speed and intensity of Braque's evolution stands as a remarkable parallel to modern art's shifting focus from representation to abstraction. Bringing together sixty works from museums and private collections around the world, this book offers scholarly assessments that contextualise Braque's career amidst unprecedented technological advances, new schools of thought, and an overall acceleration of everyday life in Western Europe. This includes the invention of moving pictures, which held a particular fascination for the young artist. Film stills and documentary and archival material help readers make the connection between dynamization and the development of aesthetic forms in the visual arts, between the visual innovations of the pre-war period and the flood of media images in which we live today. More than half a century after Braque's death, this exploration of his remarkable career brings us closer to understanding the artist whom Guillaume Apollinaire considered the "touchstone" of Cubist art.

Mark Rothko's work is among the most recognisable in modern art history. His huge colour-field works enjoy enormous popularity for their luminosity, moodiness, and immersive qualities. But he didn't always paint in bold, simple swaths of colour. This graphic biography traces Rothko's entire life, from his boyhood emigration from Russia to America, to his suicide in 1970. It touches on his schooling and early work for the WPA in the 1930s; the evolution of his art from representational to purely abstract; and the dawning of his artistic philosophy, which took him farther and farther away from the material world and toward a universally emotional and expressionist modality. The book's finely detailed drawings are Rothko's signature colours and draw readers into his fascinating creative journey. While Rothko the artist was largely misunderstood during his lifetime, this unique graphic biography offers a way of making sense of his life and of decoding the visual language he invented.

The hauntingly beautiful work of Germany's most renowned Romantic painter springs to life in the pages of this beautifully produced overview featuring famous and lesser-known works in full and in detail.
Considered one of the most important figures in German art of the nineteenth century, Caspar David Friedrich is best known for his dramatic and emotional paintings, which often feature contemplative figures, sweeping landscapes, and an emphasis on the sublime and the spiritual.
This book takes a chronological approach to Friedrich's career, beginning with his early years producing traditional religious and historical scenes. It explores his innovative use of light and color, and his unprecedented treatment of the landscape as a living, dynamic entity, rather than simply as a backdrop or setting for other subjects.
The beautifully reproduced works and details in this volume help readers appreciate the astounding qualities of Friedrich's works: his palette of muted, atmospheric colors; swirling clouds, dramatic mountains, and turbulent seas; and subtle changes in light and shadow that occur throughout the day.
Readers will come away with a renewed appreciation for Friedrich's portrayals of the natural world and the unique and provocatively emotive qualities of his work. -

Told for the first time in graphic novel form, the story of Francis Bacon's life is as complex, colorful, and highly charged as his paintings. Drawn in shades of mauve, red, yellow, and blue that distinguished his palette, these illustrations weave together a troubling but compassionate narrative, one that draws on the tragic events of Bacon's childhood and youth, as well as reflecting the profoundly passionate yearnings of the artist he became.
Separated into thematic and chronological sections the novel highlights the prevailing influences of Bacon's life and times: his early autodidacticism and estrangement from his family; his struggles to make his way as a surrealist painter and his destruction of his early work. It traces his gradual success in postwar Europe, his powerful and often violent romantic relationships, his foray into portraiture, and his never-ending search for subject matter and meaning in his work. Alternating between full-page illustrations and smaller, captioned works, Portolano imagines not only the known details of Bacon's biography, but also his inner life-the dreams, fears, and obsessions that were equally formidable underpinnings of his oeuvre. Woven to gether with historical facts and figures, this graphic novel reconstructs a life as only a cartoonist could-image led, thoughtfully composed, and deeply evocative of its subject matter.

The story of Klimt's astonishing artistic career is told in this beautifully produced collection of reproductions, photographs and drawings with an accompanying text that places the artist in a unique historical moment and reflects his fierce appetite for life and beauty.
Gustav Klimt's career straddled the last gasps of Vienna's golden age and the birth of modernism. When seen through this bifurcated lens, it is easy to understand why his relatively small oeuvre created such a lasting impact.
This gorgeously illustrated biography explores the unique environment in which Klimt worked-a society in which the schooling of artists was both appreciated and encouraged; a city that was pouring money into magnificently ornate architecture and portraiture; a population that was both experimenting with and suppressing freedom of thought. The full breadth of Klimt's accomplishments is represented here-history and symbolist paintings, building decorations, murals, posters, magazine illustrations, portraits, and landscapes.
Readers will learn how Klimt navigated the complex architecture of fin-de-sie cle Vienna and helped found the Vienna Secession and they will see how Klimt's style and motifs changed extensively through the years. Dozens of key works allow for close inspection of Klimt's dazzling artistry, his profound appreciation of female sensuality and his brilliant application of color and mosaic. The author draws out the importance of the relation between the plane surfaces of Klimt's paintings and the spaces they represent, thereby raising surprising connections between his painting and his skills in the applied arts.
Compact and satisfying, this book traces a singular artist's trajectory across an ever-changing cultural landscape. -
Throughout his career, Magritte subverted expectations about artists in the world by disguising himself as an unremarkable member of the bourgeoisie. While the public mined his work for symbolism and deep meaning, the truth is, that with Magritte, what you see is what you get.
What readers will get with this gorgeous volume is a deeply engaging overview of Magritte's entire career, and an eloquent argument that his Surrealist masterpieces were simply an extension of the Romantic tradition. Chronologically arranged, this volume features full- page reproductions of thirty-five works, each paired with a concise text that highlights its significance in Magritte's catalog. In addition to greatest hits, such as Time Transfixed, 1938; The Treachery of Images, 1929; and The Lovers, 1928, the inclusion of several lesser-known works provides an overview of the range and character of Magritte's art. Readers will become acquainted with the main figures in the artist's life, including relatives, colleagues, rivals, and they will see how Magritte's relationships with collectors and dealers led to the production of particular works, as well as how his theories about painting evolved over the years.
Across this compact but utterly satisfying book, Magritte's exquisite use of color, his grasp of collage and composition, and his superb gifts for invention and mood are luminously and thrillingly in evidence. -
This magnificent boxed-set features stunning, accordion-fold, color reproductions of Monet's essential works, accompanied by a separate booklet with background and descriptions of each painting.
Fans of Impressionism will delight in seeing some of their favorite works presented in generously sized accordion fold pages, which bring Monet's representations of nature to exquisite life.
Arranged chronologically, this volume helps readers appreciate the achievements of a long and fruitful career. Natural beauty, color and light were the object of Monet's incessant research, and he never lost sight of what was essential to him - the truth of his sensations. From the faithful transcription of the landscape in his early days to the gestural drawing of the final water lilies at Giverny, this book allows us to follow and understand the evolution of his creativity. The themes of Monet's work (the seashore, the Seine, gardens, the seasons) are discussed, as well as the techniques he used, such as the decomposition of light and color through the brushstroke; the use of repetition and series to better reflect atmospheric variations; and the progressive dissolution of forms, which led to him being considered the precursor of abstraction.
Packaged in an elegant slipcase, this volume reflects the beautiful artistry and timeless traditions that are embodied in the artworks themselves. -

On the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the artist's birth, this catalogue presents for the first time an overview of Marie-Louise von Motesiczky's paintings in an elegant volume of full colour reproductions accompanied by illuminating commentary. Born in Vienna, she studied with Max Beckmann, who became a significant influence on the young artist. Later, in exile in London, Motesiczky grew close to Oskar Kokoschka and became acquainted with some of the leading intellectuals of the twentieth century, including Elias Canetti, with whom she shared a long and intimate relationship. The paintings and drawings in this book explore the artist's transition from the edgy realism of her early years to the softer and more poetic paintings of her later work. Her portraits, for which she is most famous, include compelling self-examinations as well as a moving series devoted to her mother. Essays on Motesiczky's youth in Vienna, her friendship with Beckmann, and her time in London provide crucial background to a unique and fascinating artist whose wider recognition is long overdue.
